REACHing Out Blurb for DECEMBER 22, 2019
And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good-will to men!" This line from the well-known Christmas carol "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" has an interesting story behind it. The writer of the poem that the song came from was literally in despair at the state of his world during the Civil War in 1863. His wife had tragically died in a fire, his 18-year-old son was severely injured in the war, and hate seemed to be fueling the destruction of our country. At an extremely low point, bells from a nearby church on Christmas day reminded him of the truth "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, The right prevail, with peace on earth, good-will to men." Still today we live in an extremely dark world of sin with people continually hurting themselves and each other. But, Jesus rings louder than all of it. He has overcome the world (John 16:33). That is what you and the rest of the world needs to hear this Christmas.
