REACHing Out Blurb for DECEMBER 15, 2019
A lot of people call me Scrooge this time of year. I struggle quite a lot with the month of December. As soon as Thanksgiving ends (sometimes sooner) we are launched into a whirlwind of special events, songs, and lights, an onslaught of parties, gatherings, and a calendar that is unhealthily over full. I love to spend time with family and friends, don’t misunderstand. My struggle is with the fact that I see very little Christ in any of the “holiday” madness. In my observation, for the vast majority, December is just a mad dash to get everything done, attended, and wrapped as expected. It is as if we were given strict orders by some controlling force to get all of this stuff done in December. As fun as it seems at times this is nothing more than going through the motions. The Bible warns us about a lukewarm faith and losing our first love (Jesus). Whether you consider it cliché or not is Jesus really the reason for the Christmas season for you? Is He the one that motivates all your plans and actions this season? What are we telling the world when we let ourselves become so busy with doing tradition that they can’t understand what (or rather who) we are really celebrating?
