A few years back we (Journey Church) took a survey of the people in our community. It started with a rented booth at the mall and ended with us knocking on many hundreds of doors within a several mile radius of the church. There were just three questions and we recorded all the answers: 1. Do you believe there is a heaven and a hell? 2. In your understanding, what determines a person’s destination (heaven or hell) after death? 3. If you were to die today, would you go to heaven or hell? Some people were greatly offended by these questions. Some people avoided them. Some people argued the existence of God or the deity of Jesus. Some people didn’t care. Our results showed, however, that the overwhelming majority of people in this area simply didn’t understand the Gospel. The vast majority of people we spoke with gave us some form of “I’m just trying to be a good person” or said that consistently going to church would get them to heaven. This is frightening. In a city with a church literally on every corner, still most people believe their own good works will save them from the fire of hell. If you only ever hang around “church people” It is easy not to believe this. Truth is, these people will not know the truth, that JESUS is the only way, if you do not tell them. A few simple verses will be your guide, keep these close: Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, John 3:16, John 14:6, Romans 5:8.

Over the years we have had many people come with us on a Monday night Watered Gardens Rescue Team outing. This ministry is far from the concept of “visitation” that many people think it is. Sometimes we are in the woods witnessing to people in a homeless camp, sometimes in an abandoned building called “Murder Mansion” praying with people. But sometimes we will go for a while, even weeks at a time with very little interaction - Nobody is home, we’ve been given bad addresses, no one is in the homeless camps. I’ve seen ministry volunteers on more than one occasion take this to mean that the ministry has become fruitless, God is done with it, and that we are being told to move on. After going for weeks with few good visits, that trip into the abandoned building yielded two people who gave their life to Christ and were baptized, clean off of drugs, living a new life. Results are simply not in our timing, they belong to God. God teaches us all kinds of things in the midst of our fight to consistently do what He has called us to. Just say yes to whatever it is He has called you to (he has, if you belong to Him) and be faithful to keep your commitment, no matter what your perceived results.

This may seem morbid to some but I’d like you to think about your last few minutes of life. I know you haven’t been there yet so you will just have to imagine. Unfortunately, some of you have stood by loved ones or friends in this moment. I’d like you to imagine your last few minutes of life, you. What would be going through your head? In 2011 I had a heart attack. The doctor told me this news in the ER and my mind immediately wondered if these could be my last minutes on earth. Obviously, I’m still here. But we all will have that moment and I believe many, many, many people’s thought at that time will be regret. They will think things like, “I spent my whole life scared to do what God had called me to do. I spent my whole life being more concerned with safety and comfort than taking risks for God. I wasted so much time just going through the motions and never spent the time to truly draw near to God”…..the list goes on. See the BIG picture right now. God has overwhelmingly blessed you right now with life (which he could take in an instant at his discretion). Use it RIGHT NOW to draw near to God and serve Him boldly instead of seeking comfort and security.
