4th 5th Grade Sunday School Note to Parents (Oct 14 2012)

Thursday, October 11, 2012 12:47:36 PM

To the Parents of a 4th/5th Grade Journey Church Sunday School Student

Dear Parent (or the one who brings the child to church):

This is just a short note to let you know about some of the exciting things going on in your child’s Sunday school class. I believe very strongly that it is our mission as their teachers to both teach and demonstrate to your child God’s amazing grace. I want it to become clear that going to church is not just another weekly activity. God demonstrated his unfathomable grace to us when he gave his own son, Jesus Christ, to pay for that we could not, all of our sin. Through faith in Christ we can have something that we cannot gain by any amount of our own effort, a right relationship with God and a place in eternity with Him. It is my goal to not just transfer this “head knowledge” to your child but to also see the Holy Spirit touch their heart with a deep love for Christ.

Bible Book Memorization

Last month we studied the importance of God’s Word. With this we began memorizing the names of the books of the bible (old and new testament). We are still working on this and will continue. The goal is not to just memorize. The goal is to feel more comfortable with God’s word. The more comfortable we feel with it, the easier it will be to read and study it throughout life.|
How you can help: Review the books of the bible with your child on a regular basis to help them memorize them.

“Sword” Drills

Ephesians 6:17 calls the bible the “Sword of the Spirit.” Your child should know how powerful it is to change hearts, minds, and lives. To help them feel comfortable with it and have some fun in the process we have started having “Sword” drills. If you are not familiar, the class as a whole simply holds their bible closed, waits for the teacher to say a verse and “Go!”, then gets to the verse as fast as possible. The first one to read it wins. Again, the object is to familiarize students with the Word of God to make it much easier to cling to later in life. Students love this activity. In time, we wish to form a sword drill team that may even go outside the church to compete. This piggybacks on learning the books of the bible.
How you can help: Review the books of the bible, practice sword drills with your child.

Scripture Memory

Each week we have a memory verse that goes along with the lesson. Memorizing scripture is very important in changing one’s heart and keeping them close to Christ. This age a good place to start.
How you can help: Review the week’s memory verse EVERY day with your child.
